Here some projects I’ve worked on in the past few years:

Web Design

» Faculty/Staff Assistance Program: This is one of three sites that I’m building for the University of Illinois’ human resources units. It went live in January 2010. Stay tuned for the launch of Staff Human Resources and Academic Human Resources!

Multimedia

High School Sports Videos
I filmed a series of prep sports videos for the 2007-2008 season, and they’re fun to do. Here are a few examples:

» Parkland girls’ basketball team focuses on new season
» Mount Tabor prepares to meet Watauga in football semifinals
» Atkins football team prepares for their second playoff game

High Rock Lake: Public Resource, Company Profits
This was a 2007 project, and I did everything but write the article.

Retooling: Can our work force be retrained?
This was a joint project I made in 2006 with another web producer and a business reporter. I was responsible for the video and text, and collaborated on the design and construction of the Flash package.

Unsafe Haven: The Crisis in Home Health Care
Joe Murphy and I built this package in 2005 – the code for the searchable database is his. This won two awards.
» N.C. Home Health Care Databases
» See the series

Trail of Hope: Woman’s death doesn’t end her dream of a therapeutic-riding center
I worked on this project in 2004, and the Flash is a little primitive. But I’m proud of the audio.

Special Sections

» Murders at Grassy Creek: This was the last project that I worked on for JournalNow.com, in April 2008.  The videos were shot and edited by Michelle Johnson, a multimedia reporter. Scanning in the alleged murderer’s prison letters gave me a creepy feeling.

» Journal in Education: I helped design and build this website, which promotes the Winston-Salem Journal’s “Newspapers in Education” program. It recently won an award, but I haven’t been able to get the fine details yet – I’ll add it as soon as I know!

» Five Years Later: I designed this website for the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Some of the reader-submitted stories were also published in print. The videos and interactive packages were provided by our corporate headquarters.

» NASCAR Nation: This is a section that I built to accompany a print series about the business end of NASCAR. I created the photo galleries and edited the audio interviews. It was used by multiple Media General properties.

Grad School Thesis Projects

» @Home Chicago: I was accountable for the design and construction of the website, coordinating a team of five graduate students. I also delivered the formal presentation to a news industry audience. (Note: It was created in 2003 and now looks hopelessly dated. For example, it was made entirely in tables and the 360-degree photo was really cutting-edge. It was my first experience building an entire website, so it’s on here for sentimental reasons.)

» Local Information Project: Using the Newspaper Management list of 103 U.S. newspapers, we evaluated their websites’ effectiveness in providing local info.
